MBE Food Awareness: Snack Procedure Update

Greetings, Meadow Brook Partners!

Please note that our snack checkers are looking for manufacturers labels for approved snacks.

We are unable to approve handwritten notes on bags.

If you would like to use our copy machine to copy manufacturer labels please contact me at sberg@rochester.k12.mi.us to make arrangements.

Fruits and vegetable are good to send, either whole or cut.  If this changes I will be in touch.

Please review our most recent food awareness updates at: ThinkMBE Food Awareness

Also, please touch base any time with thoughts, ideas, or questions.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping all Meadow Brook student safe!

  1. Hello, Seth! Having a manufactured label on the snack is very expensive and also there are very few inexpensive/healthy alternatives with labels. I do not want my son to have the added preservatives for that type of packaged snack that you are requiring. Fruit is very limited as to what a child can eat as well. Are other schools doing this because I have heard they are not doing so with this level of confinement. We are very sympathetic to children with food allergies but there is such a financial and healthy choice burden on the rest of the school in regards to these snack rules. Being able to hand-write on a zip-lock bags that they are nut-free should be sufficient according to the district allergy guidelines (13. Snacks should be free from food allergens specific to students in the classroom. No student will provide
or share a snack with another student). Please let me know.

    1. Thank you Kati! Very important input. I appreciate your concern and we are ready to support. The good news is that all we’re asking for is a cut out or photocopied label along with the snack in a baggie. This way parents can continue to send bulk snacks while helping us make sure that all kids are safe at school. Also, we are prepared to help. If you have questions or need further support please don’t hesitate to contact me directly at sberg@rochester.k12.mi.us. Thanks again for contributing to this important dialogue! Seth
