Meadow Brook Staffing and Programming Update: Partnerships Enhanced!

Safe. Respectful. Responsible.

Greetings Meadow Brook Partners,

I hope you’re all enjoying a safe, fun, and relaxing long weekend with family and friends!

I have some great news to bring to you with regard to our Meadow Brook staff, and the teaching and learning collaborations that continue to drive joyful engagement and achievement for our students!

Our team has grown!

We’ve recently hired Mrs. Deborah Hills and Mrs. Saira Khalid, and Mrs. Eve Putrus has accepted an extension of two hours/day in our Resource Room.

Mrs. Hills comes to us with nearly three decades of teaching experience, over which time she has taught the Readers’ and the Writers’ Workshop models using Teachers College Reading and Writing Project materials.  She has also taught math using the Every Day Mathematics program materials.  As you know, we use both resources in our daily instruction at every grade level.

In retirement from Rochester Community Schools Mrs. Hills has served in multiple long-term positions including as a Learning Consultant and an Intervention Specialist.

I’m thrilled to report that Mrs. Hills is now working full time in collaboration with our Meadow Brook second, third, and fourth grade teams!  She is coordinating with our classroom teachers and support staff to provide individual and small group instruction, intervention, and enrichment as needed.

Mrs. Khalid (or “Mrs. S” as the students call her) has been a member of the Meadow Brook team for some time.  She has been a guest Paraeducator in our GE and Visually Structured classrooms, including her long-term service in one of our Visually Structured classrooms this past fall.

Mrs. S is now collaborating with both Mrs. Beier and Mrs. Jakubiak, working with individual students and small groups of student in each of their second grade classrooms for two hours each day.

She spends another portion of her day serving on our Noon Recess/Lunch supervisory team.

Finally, I’m very excited to announce that Mrs. Lyons and I are working together with Mrs. Czarnioski and her students to learn about science and social studies this year!

Mrs. Lyons is teaching Social studies to our 4th grade split class students and I’m teaching the Science curriculum.

We’re having a blast and learning a bunch!

It’s an exciting time to be a Meadow Brook Hero, with all hands on deck to ensure a collaborative, supportive culture for our staff and our parents and world-class education for our students!

Thank you for your patience and your partnership…in it together for the kids!

Hero Headlines: Mindfullness Modeling and Practice

Be a Meadow Brook Hero! Safe. Respectful. Responsible.

Greetings, Meadow Brook Partners!

We live in a really busy world with lots of expectations, and so do our kids.

Sometimes it’s difficult to find balance.

Sometimes it’s difficult to find calm.

Sometimes is difficult to focus.

We know that wellbeing is among the critical foundations of happiness and achievement.  When we feel good about ourselves we’re better able to focus on learning, socializing, and having fun.

The same is true for our kids.

At Meadow Brook we use positive behavior supports at all tiers of instruction and intervention to help drive a culture of wellbeing among kids and adults.

We focus on concepts like gratitude, kindness, and compassion as we seek to continueously learn about and share tools and strategies that support our individual and collective wellbeing.

One great strategy is to include mindfulness practice in our daily routines.

In my quest to learn and grow I recently came across the following New York Times article with some connected resources that can help when thinking about mindfulness practice for kids: Mindfulness For Children

The article underscores some important potential outcomes of consistent mindfulness modeling and practice, such as:

  • decreased anxiety and increased happiness
  • enhanced ability to focus
  • greater connectedness to others and the environment
  • deepened problem solving skills
  • lowered aggression and stress
  • relief from social and academic pressures

If you have some time to explore the article I believe you will find it time well spent.

Please touch base any time with thoughts, ideas, or questions…your input is always welcome and very much appreciated!

Thank you for your patience and your partnership…in it tougher for the kids!

With gratitude,

Seth

Some Ways To Get Involved In MBE PTA – It’s All About Our Kids!

The PTA is looking for staff and parents who are willing and able to help with a few different upcoming projects.

Our Health & Wellness Team is starting a Kindness/Positivity/Hero committee to look into ways to incorporate more kindness and positivity projects/activities into the school. There will be a meeting this Monday, Feb. 11th at 9:30 a.m. in the planning. If you’d like to help out, but can’t make the meeting, contact Allison Patterson (algal1@ameritech.net).

Also, as part of our continued School of Excellence improvement plan, we are looking for ways to incorporate signs throughout the school in multiple languages and would love to get some help from those of you who speak other languages. If you are interested in helping out with this project, please email ptameadowbrookelementary@gmail.com.

Love to read and share books with students? The Authors in April (AIA) team is looking for parent volunteers to read books by this year’s authors in the classrooms. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Jamie Rawcliffe (Jamie.rawcliffe@gmail.com).

Thanks for considering these exciting opportunities!
