Hero Headlines: Mouse PAW China 2019 “We Share”

Be A Meadow Brook Hero!

Safe. Respectful. Responsible.

We went to China last week.  Take a quick look with the lates Mouse PAW (Peek at the Week) video embedded below.

What a beautiful country!

We were treated with such incredible kindness and warmth.

We moved from city to city and school to school.

We took a whirlwind tour of the education system in and around the Shanghai region.

We met administrators, teachers, parents, students, and other stakeholders along the way.

We shared stories of our individual and collective journey and we listened as our hosts shared theirs with us.  It was wonderful.

We talked, we problem solved, we ate, we laughed, we played, we drew calligraphy characters, and we learned a few words to express how we were feeling…”thank you” and “beautiful” among others.

We engaged and our Chinese partners engaged with us.

I can’t describe the magnitude of the wonders we experience in words or in pictures.  You simply had to be there.  Actually, I highly recommend that you go.

Of all the thoughts and ideas rushing through my mind in this moment the one that stands out the most is that we are more alike than we are different.

I’m honored to represent Rochester Community Schools and Meadow Brook Elementary School as a part of this most recent China delegation, and I’m ready to extend the experience as we seek to continue enhancing our Global Awareness initiatives including our efforts to extend curriculum, programming and opportunities around diversity and inclusion.

Coming tougher with like-minded people from around the world is good for our community and great for our students, from the youngest to the oldest we serve. It’s good for our teachers, our parents, and our administrators.

It’s been really good for me:).

Here’s to another joyful Meadow Brook week!

Thank you for your patience and you partnership…in it together for the kids.

With gratitude,

Seth

Autism Awareness: Genuine Friendships

Be a Meadow Brook Hero! Safe. Respectful. Responsible.

The friendships we forge at Meadow Brook are so incredibly important.

When we think about being safe, respectful, and responsible, we often think about how we interact with one another and who we are as a community of thinkers, learners, and doers.

Among our many sources of great pride is our wonderful visually structured programing, through which we serve friends of all ages, from pre-school to fifth grade, who have unique communication needs.

Not all friends in our visually structured programs are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), however, I found the following article to be good guide to thinking about how we can form genuine friendships with one other, regardless of where we are in the development of our communication skills.

How To Be Friends With A Child Who Has Autism

The article give simple and practical strategies like:

  • including all friends in events like birthday parties
  • talking to our neurotypical kids about differences in communication and the importance of patience
  • thinking through unique needs and making accommodations when we learn and play together
  • looking for areas of interest
  • using and responding to humor
  • playing games that are predictable
  • engaging in activities that each friend is good at and enjoys
  • getting to know and seeking to understand all of our friends

Students, teachers, and parents in the Meadow Brook are compassionate and kind. I am extremely proud of the way we get along and care for one another.

I am also very proud of the fact that we are set on a foundation of growth and always working to make our school an even better place to learn and grow with each passing day!

Please touch base any time with thoughts, ideas or questions. Your input is always welcome and very much appreciated!

Thank you for your patience and your partnership…in it together for the kids!

With gratitude,

Seth

The PTA Needs You: Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities!

The PTA is looking for staff and parents who are willing and able to help with a few different upcoming projects.

Our Health & Wellness Team is starting a Kindness/Positivity/Hero committee to look into ways to incorporate more kindness and positivity projects/activities into the school.

The committee will be meeting this Wednesday Jan. 23 at 9:30 a.m. in the planning room.

If you’d like to help out but can’t make this meeting, contact Allison Patterson (algal1@ameritech.net).

Also, as part of our continued School of Excellence improvement plan, we are looking for ways to incorporate signs throughout the school in multiple languages and would love to get some help from those of you who speak other languages.

If you are interested in helping out with this project, please email ptameadowbrookelementary@gmail.com.
