Partnerships Drive Enrichment at Meadow Brook!

Safe. Respectful. Responsible.

Greetings, Meadow Brook Partners!

I am so proud to be a Meadow Mouse, and so grateful for all the Meadow Brook Heroes who are dedicating their time and energy to drive enrichment for our kids!

If you missed it, the first Meadow Brook First Lego League Jr. Expo happened yesterday!  It might as well have been a rock concert!

Mr. and Mrs. Vittorini and their crew of parent coaches and volunteers were our in force along with the Rochester High School “Faclons Engineering Design Solutions (FEDS) team, and our incredible community of parents and relatives there to support this year’s ten problem solving, collaborative, robotics teams!  Yes…ten!

Here’s a peek:

Also, our incredible group of Math Pentathlon thinkers are well underway toward representing MBE in competition in 2019!

Special thanks to the MBE PTA and our incredible team of parent Math Pentathlon leaders who are making sure this important program thrives at Meadow Brook!

Stay tuned for more about Meadow Brook’s comprehensive enrichment programming, both during and after school opportunities.

Touch base with any thoughts, ideas, or questions…I’m always looking to support innovation on behalf of the kids we serve!

Hero Headlines: Doing Our Best!

Safe. Respectful. Responsible.

Greetings, Meadow Brook Partners!

My wife and I have four kids. We describe our seven-year-old as the creative explorer.

This personality type makes him incredibly interesting and fun to be around when he’s engaged in a project, or telling us about a discovery, or enthusiastically demonstrating a new skill. The same makes it challenging to support him when he’s frustrated.

He’s sensitive. When he’s frustrated he gets upset with himself and anyone else in the general vicinity. He shows his frustration with the same passion that he shows his enthusiasm with. It’s challenging to watch him frustrated. It appears almost painful, and as anyone reading this message knows, it’s challenging to see kids in pain, particularly our own.

We want to help and I think we can with this caveat – we have to be ok with the journey. Our help doesn’t always sink in right away. In fact, it usually doesn’t.

In education we say, “They don’t always blossom on our watch.”

We mean that the kids we serve each year don’t typically demonstrate that our interactions are pieces of their growth puzzles.  They are, though.

A few days ago I was reminded that we achieve peace when we understand that doing our best is good enough.

Let’s continue to remind our kids that we’re looking for effort over big wins, grit over high scores, creativity over lists of facts.

Let’s continue to remind them that doing their best is good enough.  Let’s encourage it.  Let’s support it.  Let’s celebrate it.

While they may not blossom on our watch, we have the power to contribute to peaceful, joyful, and fruitful learning journeys for each and every one of them.

They are each unique.  They will each take unique paths.  One thing they can each do is their individual best.

Let’s continue to do our best to intentionally support that.

Thank you for you patience and your partnership…in it together for the kids.

Here’s to another joyful Meadow Brook Week!

Wishing you a joyful weekend!

Hero Headlines 9.14.18: Literacy, Respect, and Communcation

Good Afternoon, Meadow Brook Partners!

Thanks to all who were able to attend curriculum night last night!  On behalf of the Meadow Brook staff, we truly enjoyed the change to spend some time getting to you know a bit better and sharing our enthusiasm for another joyful school year!

Three Things: Literacy Learning, The MBE S.C.O.P.E of Vision, and Communication

LITERACY LEARNING:

I mentioned the book “Rufus Goes To Sea” in one of the whole-group sessions.

Kim Griswell and Valeri Gorbachev do an outstanding job of writing and drawing about this young pig’s love for reading, and how that love translates into a world of possibilities.

Rufus is a great example of what we hope and strive for with regard to a love for literature and a command of literacy for each of our students.  Rufus’ ability to fully transport himself through space and time by way of his favorite books is a wonderful example of the power of reading.

The author and illustrator demonstrate the power of creativity, imagination, and dedication to one’s craft.

The combination of access to literacy learning tools like books, journals, paper, pencils, and crayons, and the understanding that we are all readers, writers, and explorers is explosive, life changing, and magical!

Please continue to share joyful reading and writing experiences with your children at home.  It should always be joyful, pressure free, and guided by your children’s interests and excitement!

THE MBE S.C.O.P.E. of Vision:

As I mentioned last night, the graphic below represents our Meadow Brook S.C.O.P.E of Vision (Student-Centered, Optimistic, and Partnership-Enhanced).

We are committed to a core that puts students first, with our RCS Respect Code squarely at the foundation.  All stakeholders, starting with students must be Safe, Valued, and Respected at all times!

Through every challenge, we remain positive and optimistic, holding firm to the belief that each one is short-term, limited-in-scope, and solvable!

We believe that it’s ok to question one another’s judgement and that it’s healthy to question one another’s ideas, but that questioning one another’s motivation can deteriorate our the positive, productive nature of our partnerships.

Thought every challenge and every triumph, we trust that we are each only motivate to care for and serve our students well!
