Hero Headlines: Learning Is Fun At Meadow Brook!

Be A Meadow Brook Hero!

Safe. Respectful. Responsible.

It’s been great to have some downtime with family and friends over the past week!

Breaks from school are all about mindfulness and balance.  In order to do our best learning we have to be our best selves, which often means relaxing and having fun.

At Meadow Brook we work hard to see that the students we serve have fun while they learn.

We take pride in our core philosophy that children should be comfortable and relaxed at school so they can focus on engaging in creative, collaborative, exploration.

In the week before our break we put together some programs and activities on the foundation of that core philosophy!

The Decimal Diner. Connecting math to eating out!

Snap Words In Disguise. Dressing up is fun!

A Day At The Beach. Reading is always fun at MBE!

Join us on Twitter @ThinkMBE for daily updates.

Here’s to another joyful Meadow Brook week!

Thank you for your patience and you partnership…in it together for the kids.

With gratitude,

Seth

Hero Headlines: Mouse PAW China 2019 “We Share”

Be A Meadow Brook Hero!

Safe. Respectful. Responsible.

We went to China last week.  Take a quick look with the lates Mouse PAW (Peek at the Week) video embedded below.

What a beautiful country!

We were treated with such incredible kindness and warmth.

We moved from city to city and school to school.

We took a whirlwind tour of the education system in and around the Shanghai region.

We met administrators, teachers, parents, students, and other stakeholders along the way.

We shared stories of our individual and collective journey and we listened as our hosts shared theirs with us.  It was wonderful.

We talked, we problem solved, we ate, we laughed, we played, we drew calligraphy characters, and we learned a few words to express how we were feeling…”thank you” and “beautiful” among others.

We engaged and our Chinese partners engaged with us.

I can’t describe the magnitude of the wonders we experience in words or in pictures.  You simply had to be there.  Actually, I highly recommend that you go.

Of all the thoughts and ideas rushing through my mind in this moment the one that stands out the most is that we are more alike than we are different.

I’m honored to represent Rochester Community Schools and Meadow Brook Elementary School as a part of this most recent China delegation, and I’m ready to extend the experience as we seek to continue enhancing our Global Awareness initiatives including our efforts to extend curriculum, programming and opportunities around diversity and inclusion.

Coming tougher with like-minded people from around the world is good for our community and great for our students, from the youngest to the oldest we serve. It’s good for our teachers, our parents, and our administrators.

It’s been really good for me:).

Here’s to another joyful Meadow Brook week!

Thank you for your patience and you partnership…in it together for the kids.

With gratitude,

A Little Birdie Told Me!

Safe. Respectful. Responsible.

Greetings, Meadow Brook Partners!

[Scattered through this post you will see some links to #ThinkMBE Tweets that allow you to see into your kids’ classrooms and help us share our story of safe and joyful learning at Meadow Brook.  Also, we’ve added a new feature to this blog through which you can engage with our @ThinkMBE twitter feed in the sidebar menu to the right.]

It’s hard to believe that we’ve turned the corner into December!

As I reflect on the start of the 1819 school year I’m filled with pride and enthusiasm!  So many wonderful things have been happening at Meadow Brook and so many more are yet to come!

Our dedicated educators have been digging into the Teacher’s College Reading & Writing Project units of study through the Workshop Model from Columbia University (@TCWRP)  and we’ve seen some incredible results!

Kids from kindergarten to 5th grade are discovering & rediscovering their love for reading & writing each day as they engage in whole group instruction through brief mini-lessons, individual & collaborative literacy learning during independent reading & writing times that last from 30 to 45 minutes (& sometimes beyond), & dig deeper with teachers & support staff through small group conferencing & 1:1 confereing.

I’m thrilled & amazed every time I enter a Meadow Brook classroom!

One of our priorities is to share that thrill & amazement with every Meadow Brook stakeholder by implementing, reflecting on, & enhancing our communication tools & strategies.  It’s a School Improvement Plan (SIP) component & a part of our PTA School of Excellence (SOE) efforts.

Also, effective communication is critical to developing & Maintaining positive partnerships.  When we share our stories we build understanding, trust, and compassion.

Please continue to engage with this ThinkMBE blog each week (our ever-growing digital portfolio) & also, look into joining us on Twitter at @ThinkMBE (using #ThinkMBE) if you haven’t already.

Our Twitter feed is available on this blog (look to the right), and we post every day, giving you multimedia insights into how we challenge and meet the needs of every Meadow Brook student through our Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS).

Math Workshop: Instruction, Collaboration, & Creativity!

A Message From Ms. Reeves (2nd Grade Teacher & Meadow Brook Hero!)

Our math workshop consists of a mini lesson, a journal page or an activity that aligns with the concept covered during the lesson, and then a variety of math games that the students can participate in that require them to use the math strategies that we have been studying.

As an added challenge this week, the students were able to design their own math games to play.

The only requirement they had was to incorporate addition facts.

The students took their creativity to a whole new level!

Thanks to Ms. Reeves and her incredible students for sharing out about this part of their learning journey…sharing our stories builds our partnerships and strengthens our school community!
